The definitive guide to skiing and snow boarding on real snow with real ski lifts
in the mountains of Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham

Alston

Almost everyone using the ski lifts are locals and at the end of the day they go back to their own homes, but if you are from further afield, the snow looks good and you've got more than one day then Alston would make a good center from which to sample the varied skiing of the North Pennines (ie Allenheads, Harwood, Swinhope and Yad Moss).
There are also hotels directly adjacent to each ski lift - see under Aprés Ski in the Ski Mountains section.

Alston is a pennine market town with cobbled streets, real shops and a mining heritage. There are many pubs and even a swimming pool. There are no gear shops but ski hire is available (see right). With hotels, pubs, B&Bs, self-catering and a Youth Hostel there is accommodation to please all budgets (unless your idea of slumming it is the Schloss at Pontresina, in which case you may be disappointed) There is no transport to the slopes from Alston - hitching with fellow skiers and boarders would work I guess or you could conceivably hire a cab, however it must be said that without your own car you will have trouble getting to Alston in the first place.
Alston Moor - the hills of the North The sign says it all.
Ski Hire Available at Alston

Skis and boots can be hired from Alston Adventure and Training Center at High Plains Lodge. Much of the kit is new for 2001.
