The definitive guide to skiing and snow boarding on real snow with real ski lifts
in the mountains of Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham

Welcome to the Ski Resorts of Northern England

Introduction

Ski Resorts ? Well, not exactly. Really just a few ski lifts up on the hills and moors. They may not be your next holiday destination, but if you fancy the odd day out on real snow, then this is for you.
S
ix local ski clubs have permanent ski tows in the northern hills. While some use rudimentary rope tows run off old tractor engines, others have modern button lifts bought second hand from the Alps. In almost all cases you can turn up and buy a day pass, though you are strongly encouraged to support the clubs by taking out annual membership. Each slope has something to offer most skiers and they are all worth a try. Aprés ski is available at traditional English pubs near the slopes.

This is an unofficial guide - Please contact the clubs for the latest details.
All the tows are run for the benefit of club members, visitors are ensured a warm welcome but restrictions may apply at busy times.
Even during good conditions tows are often not running midweek.
All the ski tows are run by volunteers so leave the hut tidy and be nice to them when the lift breaks down.
The slopes are used by agreement with local farmers and landowners. Park sensibly and no litter please.

Pylon 4 on Raise.
High clouds give poor visibility, but the snow gives good sport.

This is better than using my email account which gets clogged up with offers to improve the length of certain body parts, etc. Offers, which I might add, are as unnecessary as they are uncalled for.
If you wish to email me please put the word ski in the subject line so it stands out from the usual spam.

Winter 2003 / 04 - A Note from the Editor

D e a r   R e a d e r s,

Your support is needed - through good years and bad...
Ski tows are expensive to maintain and there are only a limited number of days each year over which to recoup the costs - poor seasons and poor support can stretch a club's resources.
Our local ski tows are run by club members who do all the the maintenance and administration work without pay.
Please help ensure the long term future of our local ski facilities by taking out annual membership and giving a helping hand. Be prepared to support them through good years and bad.
