The definitive guide to skiing and snow boarding on real snow with real ski lifts
in the mountains of Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham
Retrospective - 2000 / 2001 Season
We had some great snow cover this season - too bad that the foot and mouth epidemic lead to skiing and boarding being suspended just days before the best of the snows fell.
The start of the season looked promising with some snowfall during November, too little to ski on though.
A dump just after Christmas gave good sport at Harwood and on Raise and many took advantage of the sunny weather over the holiday period.

Good quantities of snow dumped on the Lakeland fells during January and February, but sadly missed the Pennines altogether. During January and February
there were fair sized drifts on all the slopes at Raise and with just enough snow to cover the tow line a good turnout of skiers and boarders enjoyed themselves most weekends and on some midweek days too.

The best snow of the season fell a couple of days after the start of the foot and mouth epidemic and 10 days of great conditions and blue skies were missed - all slopes would have been at their best over that period - and there would have been something for a few weeks after that.
And that was it - all slopes remained closed through to the end of the season.

Yad Moss & Harwood:
Unmistakable signs of Foot and Mouth

A note from the Editor:

As I write this report all the fells and moors are still closed to the public. We must also spare a thought for the farmers of the Pennines and the Lakeland fells on whose grazing land we ski and snowboard: some farmers have lost flocks wintering on lowland farms but there has been no F&M on the high Pennines as yet, and the Helvellyn range has also remained free of infection - let's hope it stays that way.

Here's to next year...

News - Foot and mouth hits tows
[June 2001]
All the local clubs have lost important day-pass income when skiing had to be suspended due to the Foot and Mouth epidemic. The Carlisle Ski Club whose Yad Moss slope was newly upgraded estimates that loses could be as much as £2000.
After a couple of lean years our local clubs are desperate for more members to secure the future of these great local ski facilities, so please do your bit by joining up now and start looking forward to the first snows of the coming winter.

Moving the snow to where it's needed means more days skiing.

Not one... but two.
