We
had some great snow cover this season - too bad that the
foot and mouth epidemic lead to skiing and boarding being
suspended just days before the best of the snows fell.
The start of the season looked promising with some snowfall
during November, too little to ski on though.
A dump just after Christmas gave good sport at Harwood
and on Raise and many took advantage of the sunny weather
over the holiday period.
Good
quantities of snow dumped on the Lakeland fells during
January and February, but sadly missed the Pennines altogether.
During January and February
there were fair sized drifts on all the slopes at Raise
and with just enough snow to cover the tow line a good
turnout of skiers and boarders enjoyed themselves most
weekends and on some midweek days too.
The best snow of the season fell a couple of days after
the start of the foot and mouth epidemic and 10 days of
great conditions and blue skies were missed - all slopes
would have been at their best over that period - and there
would have been something for a few weeks after that.
And that was it - all slopes remained closed through to
the end of the season. |

A
note from the Editor:
As
I write this report all the fells and moors are still
closed to the public. We
must also spare a thought for the farmers of the Pennines
and the Lakeland fells on whose grazing land we ski and
snowboard: some farmers have lost flocks wintering on
lowland farms but there has been no F&M on the high
Pennines as yet, and the Helvellyn range has also remained
free of infection - let's hope it stays that way.
Here's to next year...
