The definitive guide to skiing and snow boarding on real snow with real ski lifts
in the mountains of Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham
Retrospective - 2003 Season

A cracking little season up to the end of January, but poor from there on in.

Over Christmas there was excellent skiing at all locations and this continued into early January. Really excellent conditions and many many people on the slopes. There were long queues at Yad Moss and the lift passes had to be limited to keep queues to acceptable levels.
Yad Moss was featured on Local Television - Border Crack & Deek About made a long news feature out of our very own Cumberland Ski Mountain.
Not to be outdone Raise was featured on John Craven's Country File - a ten minute feature with excellent shots of the slopes under full snowcover and in full sunhine.

A note from the Editor:

After the dispondancy of last year anything would be an improvement and so it proved. Excellent cold spells over the Christmas break and in January gave good sport to hundreds of us and replenished thinning bank accounts for our local clubs.

The rest of the season was very poor indeed - an exceptionally warm spring - and this serves as a reminder that we must take our chances while we can.

News: 2003 - A Great Season takes shape

Excellent snow conditions over Christmas, and in both early and late January have given the best skiing and boarding for over 3 years. All our regional tows had full snow cover at the end of January.
Early January snow gave full cover everywhere including Yad Moss where day passes had to be limited to keep the queues down to a reasonable length. Thin snow, but full cover gave fine sport to over 200 people on some days.
At the end of January a cold snowy wind blew down the East and commuters were stranded on the M11 in London. Our hearts goes out to them. No complaints could be heard up North however as skiers and boarders endured excellent snow conditions in fine weather on Swinhope Moor. More snow a few days later gave excellent mid-week skiing on Raise and in the Pennines.

Our thanks to God who can be so kind to us when he wants to.

Post Script - God deigned that it should not snow again this year. Indeed it was one of the warmest springs on record.
